On October 18, 2018, the Federal Register published Notice of October 17, 2018 – Continuation of the National Emergency With Respect to Significant Narcotics Traffickers Centered in Colombia, which extends for an additional year, the national emergency first declared on October 21, 1995 in Executive Order 12978. The national emergency is being extended because the actions of significant narcotics traffickers centered in Colombia continue to threaten the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States and cause an extreme level of violence, corruption, and harm in the United States and abroad.
