Our speakers provided a global overview of the hot topics and key trends across customs law and policy.
A diverse range of regional trends were spotlighted across the US, EU, UK, Latin America, Asia Pacific, Africa and Middle East. This included the ‘new era’ of digitisation and data sharing between customs authorities in the EU, the focus on trade facilitation across Latin America and Africa to promote regional economic growth, the convergence with the Russia sanctions regime in the UK, and enhanced scrutiny by and powers for customs authorities in the Asia Pacific and Middle East, particularly in relation to free trade zones.
The panel then considered what global developments mean in practice for compliance, emphasising that there is a growing strategic need for businesses to focus on preparedness around political and regulatory change. Businesses should consider how to integrate customs considerations into their business resilience planning, put together the right cross-functional teams to tackle the growing complexity of customs compliance, and consider value chain opportunities in new regions to diversify their operations and hedge against geopolitical uncertainty.
